                <div align="justify">-The Indian Express</div><p align="justify"><br /><em>New Delhi: </em>Taking note of a report published in Newsline on Wednesday, the Delhi High Court has asked the Delhi government and the three civic agencies to look into the issue of why the midday meals supplied to students in schools run by the three civic agencies of the capital are not up to the prescribed standards.</p><p align="justify">The High Court bench of Acting Chief Justice Badar Durrez Ahmad and Justice Vibhu Bakhru asked the Delhi government to submit a report on the &quot;serious issue&quot; of sub-standard midday meals, with details of the arrangements and monitoring system over midday meal distribution.</p><p align="justify">Newsline had on Wednesday reported that the testing of food supplied to the schools by NGOs, which run the supply kitchens, had found more than 75 per cent samples lacking in the prescribed nutritional value.</p><p align="justify">The report, which has been issued by the Education departments of the three civic agencies, says food samples tested were failing to meet the prescribed standards, which mandate that every midday meal should provide 12 gm of protein and 450 calories energy. The Shriram Institute for Industrial Research draws five samples every month from each NGO (four from schools and one from the NGO kitchen) to conduct tests.</p><p align="justify">The direction came during a hearing on a PIL related to the conditions prevalent in Delhi government and civic schools, filed by advocate Ashok Aggarwal. The Delhi High Court has been monitoring the conditions in government schools since 2010. The counsel for the civic agencies also told the court that the Delhi government had been apprised of the situation and had set up a committee to look into the issue. The counsel also conceded that the nutrition value of the meals being provided were deficient. $disp = '<div align="justify">-The Indian Express</div><p align="justify"><br /><em>New Delhi: </em>Taking note of a report published in Newsline on Wednesday, the Delhi High Court has asked the Delhi government and the three civic agencies to look into the issue of why the midday meals supplied to students in schools run by the three civic agencies of the capital are not up to the prescribed standards.</p><p align="justify">The High Court bench of Acting Chief Justice Badar Durrez Ahmad and Justice Vibhu Bakhru asked the Delhi government to submit a report on the &quot;serious issue&quot; of sub-standard midday meals, with details of the arrangements and monitoring system over midday meal distribution.</p><p align="justify">Newsline had on Wednesday reported that the testing of food supplied to the schools by NGOs, which run the supply kitchens, had found more than 75 per cent samples lacking in the prescribed nutritional value.</p><p align="justify">The report, which has been issued by the Education departments of the three civic agencies, says food samples tested were failing to meet the prescribed standards, which mandate that every midday meal should provide 12 gm of protein and 450 calories energy. The Shriram Institute for Industrial Research draws five samples every month from each NGO (four from schools and one from the NGO kitchen) to conduct tests.</p><p align="justify">The direction came during a hearing on a PIL related to the conditions prevalent in Delhi government and civic schools, filed by advocate Ashok Aggarwal. The Delhi High Court has been monitoring the conditions in government schools since 2010. The counsel for the civic agencies also told the court that the Delhi government had been apprised of the situation and had set up a committee to look into the issue. The counsel also conceded that the nutrition value of the meals being provided were deficient. The court has asked the government to explain the system of monitoring food preparation after the counsel said the meals were being prepared by 13 NGOs, which supplied food to all the schools.</p><p align="justify">During the hearing, the corporations and the government also submitted a status report on the standards of infrastructure for all government schools.</p><p align="justify">Advocate Aggarwal had informed the court last month that the schools did not have adequate infrastructure, and the government had been directed to file a report.</p><p align="justify">The court had asked for details on classroom sizes, equipment, toilets, playing fields, etc. The court has now asked Aggarwal to conduct visits to various government- and civic agency-run schools and prepare a report on whether the infrastructure norms are being followed. </p>'
