Will be careful in future, says a relieved Ashis Nandy-Ashok Bagriya

A visibly-relieved Ashis Nandy on Friday thanked the media and the public for standing by him as he was slammed and criticised for his remarks on Dalits at the Jaipur Literature Festival and said that he will be careful in future as the case was sub-judice. He, however, remarked, that he will voice his ideas "in some other country or within the four walls of my house."

"Now I will speak about my ideas in some other country or within the four walls of my house. I will have to be more careful as the case is sub-judice," he said.

In a major respite for Nandy, the Supreme Court on Friday directed the police not to arrest the sociologist. The apex court, however, warned Nandy that he should not be making controversial statements whatever his intention may be.

The court also issued notices to the Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Bihar and Chhattisgarh governments seeking their response on whether the FIRs against Nandy can be quashed. Nandy had moved the apex court seeking the quashing of the FIRs filed against him under the SC/ST Act. The Rajasthan Police had booked him under a non-bailable section, which invites upto 10 years in jail.

The police, meanwhile, can continue their investigations and question Nandy over the remarks he made at the Literature Festival.
