With details of 5 crore cases online, 15,000 courts to go digital soon |

NEW DELHI: Law minister Sadananda Gowda said on Friday the ambitious e-courts project is successfully running in 13,000 courts across the country where details of 4.76 crore pending and decided cases are available online. More than one crore judgments are already online and there is constant updating of records where all past judgments would be made available. The Cabinet has given its consent to initiate phase-II of the e-courts project that involves installing audio-video capable courts and e-kiosks in every court to provide information such as cause list, case status and judgments, to litigants and public. The information is also made available through the e-courts portal http://www.ecourts.gov.in. In Phase-II, all 15,000 courts would be digitized and the government's centralized national data grid on courts would provide statistics and important analysis court-wise like the number of adjournments given in a particular case, pendency of a case, performance of a particular court, etc. The e-courts project is intended to help in expediting justice delivery at the same time keeping a close watch on unwarranted adjournments allowed by judicial officers. The e-court facilities would provide details such as date of hearing in a case, submission of number of witnesses, past proceedings, etc. all can be accessible as data would be updated realtime. All judgments are to be uploaded latest by 6 pm same day, similar to the practice already followed in the Supreme Court and all high courts. In response to a question in Lok Sabha, Gowda said the government has been receiving suggestions for the implementation of audio-video recording of court proceedings. "This issue has also been discussed in the meetings of advisory council of the National Mission for Justice Delivery and Legal reforms," he said, but expressed helplessness in implementing it as the Chief Justice of India had advised deferment of audio-video recording. |
