                <div align="justify">-The Hindustan Times</div><p align="justify"><em>Kapurthala (Punjab): </em>Direct seeding of rice (DSR) and paddy straw management were the major issues at the Kisan Mela held in the city on Thursday.</p><p align="justify">The mela, organised by the agriculture department in association with the Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA), began with a message of 'save environment, say no to burn paddy straw'.</p><p align="justify">Four farmers, including a woman, were honoured for using DSR technology in paddy farming. The technology consumes less water, saves time, labour and gives higher yield of the crop compared to the manual transplantation of paddy seedlings.</p><p align="justify">Two other farmers were honoured for diversifying farming and utilising innovative dairy farming techniques.</p><p align="justify">Pritam Singh, a farmer, who was honoured for using the DSR technology, said that the DSR technique is a best technique for farmers as it needed only a tractor and a seeding drill to sow the crop and, in only 15 minutes, it sows one acre land, while seeding by hand consumes one day and huge labour for the same area.</p><p align="justify">&quot;In the DSR method, a farmer does not need to water the land before sowing the crop,&quot; he said.</p><p align="justify">Another farmer Jujhar Singh said that he had diversified to growing vegetables and was earning good profit.</p><p align="justify">&quot;Presently, I have cultivated three vegetables in a single farm including cucumber, cabbage, cauliflower and sugarcane, which help me in earning more profit in a short time, instead of waiting for six months and a year by harvesting wheat or paddy,&quot; he said.</p><p align="justify">Sunil Kumar was honoured for adopting silage method to preserve fodder for a long time to feed cows and using a straw chopper in his farms.</p><p align="justify">Many exhibition stalls were also put up by the government and other private companies to introduce their new products, machinery, seeds and fertilisers to the farmers.  <br />  <br />Dr Mangal Singh Sandhu, director of the agriculture department, informed about the subsidy schemes by government for farmers and also motivated farmers for diversified farming.</p>               </font>

The technology consumes less water, saves time, labour and gives higher yield of the crop compared to the manual transplantation of paddy seedlings.</p><p align="justify">Two other farmers were honoured for diversifying farming and utilising innovative dairy farming techniques.</p><p align="justify">Pritam Singh, a farmer, who was honoured for using the DSR technology, said that the DSR technique is a best technique for farmers as it needed only a tractor and a seeding drill to sow the crop and, in only 15 minutes, it sows one acre land, while seeding by hand consumes one day and huge labour for the same area.</p><p align="justify">&quot;In the DSR method, a farmer does not need to water the land before sowing the crop,&quot; he said.</p><p align="justify">Another farmer Jujhar Singh said that he had diversified to growing vegetables and was earning good profit.</p><p align="justify">&quot;Presently, I have cultivated three vegetables in a single farm including cucumber, cabbage, cauliflower and sugarcane, which help me in earning more profit in a short time, instead of waiting for six months and a year by harvesting wheat or paddy,&quot; he said.</p><p align="justify">Sunil Kumar was honoured for adopting silage method to preserve fodder for a long time to feed cows and using a straw chopper in his farms.</p><p align="justify">Many exhibition stalls were also put up by the government and other private companies to introduce their new products, machinery, seeds and fertilisers to the farmers.  <br />  <br />Dr Mangal Singh Sandhu, director of the agriculture department, informed about the subsidy schemes by government for farmers and also motivated farmers for diversified farming.</p>'
