                <div align="justify">-The Hindu</div><p align="justify"><br /><em>Madurai (Tamil Nadu): </em>Following a wane in farming activities - the only means of livelihood for a large number of villagers - owing to failure of rain and other intangible reasons, women in rural areas have sought refuge in self-help groups (SHGs) for income generation.</p><p align="justify">There is a proliferation of women SHGs in villages across Madurai district. They get help from non-governmental organisations (NGO) and National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) which give them training and financial support.</p><p align="justify">Selvi, a resident of Keeripatti, says till two years ago, she was unaware that there were opportunities for women to start business ventures and become economically independent. &quot;We were approached by an NGO, following which we identified a financially viable project and bought milch animals,&quot; she says.</p><p align="justify">With Lok Sabha elections round the corner, many of these women opine that the government should focus on women in rural areas and give them support. &quot;We live away from the city, the reason why we are never approached by the government officials with new schemes,&quot; Jyothi, another member of the SHG, rues. &quot;But economic stability has become a reality in our village thanks to NGOs' support and we hope that the new government will formulate schemes for SHGs in rural areas,&quot; she says.</p><p align="justify">A member of &lsquo;Kalanjiam' programme, supported by Dhan Foundation, says while their working model does not depend on subsidies or schemes offered by the government, the funding structure must be made entrepreneur-friendly. &quot;Banks that charge 7 per cent to 8 per cent interest on home car loans, charge us 11 to 13.25 per cent on our loans. The government must step in and ensure that our ventures are economically viable,&quot; she says.</p><p align="justify">A senior banker says while there has been a rise in the number of SHGs in the district, their repayment rate has sharply decreased. &quot;There is an over-emphasis on target-oriented functioning as opposed to focussing on micro entrepreneurship among many of these SHGs. The government must conduct training programmes that focus on feasible entrepreneurship,&quot; he says.</p>               </font>

"Banks that charge 7 per cent to 8 per cent interest on home car loans, charge us 11 to 13.25 per cent on our loans. The government must step in and ensure that our ventures are economically viable," she says. A senior banker says while there has been a rise in the number of SHGs in the district, their repayment rate has sharply decreased. "There is an over-emphasis on target-oriented functioning as opposed to focussing on micro entrepreneurship among many of these SHGs. The government must conduct training programmes that focus on feasible entrepreneurship," he says.
