Apparently, the extension services of States were found wanting.

The government quickly made available ‘propoconizole', a fungicide spray, to the States to bring the disease under control. The Agriculture Ministry and scientists of the Indian Council of Agriculture Research worked in tandem to control the disease that threatened the food security plans of the government under the proposed National Food Security Act.

Prone varieties

Cultivation of wheat varieties — HD 2733 and HD-2581 — which are susceptible to yellow rust triggered the spread of the disease as the prevailing weather conditions were conducive. In Jammu and Kashmir, about 20 per cent of the wheat crop is reported to have succumbed to the disease. Yellow rust threat to wheat output by Gargi Parsai |
The yellow rust disease that hit parts of the crucial wheat-producing States in northern India will hit production by about 5 lakh tonnes, informed sources have said.
Although the Agriculture Ministry is said to have taken “timely action,” about 3 lakh hectares under wheat was hit by the yellow rust, a fungal disease that affects the leaves of the standing crop by forming yellow stripes that do not allow photosynthesis to take place resulting in stunted growth and shrivelling grain size. The worst-affected were parts of Punjab, Haryana, Jammu, western Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Spread by winds Sources said the disease stemmed from a demonstration field and within no time hit adjoining fields as strong gusts of wind then (March) spread the fungus. Prone varieties Cultivation of wheat varieties — HD 2733 and HD-2581 — which are susceptible to yellow rust triggered the spread of the disease as the prevailing weather conditions were conducive. In Jammu and Kashmir, about 20 per cent of the wheat crop is reported to have succumbed to the disease. Pathankot was the worst affected. The disease hit Yamuna Nagar, Kurukshetra, Karnal and Panipat in Haryana and Ropar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Fatehgarh Saheb, Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur in Punjab. |
