Women make a decent living selling groundnut to beach visitors

MANGINAPUDI:
Several women living in the stretch of villages along the 9-km beach road have found a new opportunity to earn income — tapping the benefits being offered by the flourishing rural tourism with the development of the famous Manginapudi beach in Krishna district.

Under a temporary thatched store, they sell groundnut mostly grown in the sandy soil along the beach road. Some even sell fried groundnut.

Over the last one year, the number of visitors from nearby towns and Vijayawada has been increasing manifold at the Manginapudi beach.

The State government has developed it as a part of the beautification drive, apart from developing infrastructure facilities and permitting various entertainment facilities.

“Many families from the cities buy huge quantity as they are fond of the groundnut grown in our area,” say the vendors.

The women were daily workers earlier.
Expansion plans

“The minimum income from our store on Sunday exceeds ?500. Many more stores are being planned by our villagers,” they say. The stores are open round the year as the women procure it in huge quantity from the local farmers.

The Beach Photographers Association with more than 100 members had recently passed a resolution fixing ?10,000 fee for membership to earn a livelihood at the beach. However, one should belong to the local area or panchayat for membership.

By early this year, women and youth from at least 10 coastal villages are eking out a livelihood owing to the boost to rural tourism.
