                <strong>The state of organic agriculture in India</strong></h1>

                <div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">A new report entitled: <em>The World of Organic Agriculture: Statistics and Emerging Trends 2014</em> by Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) says that out of the 19 lakh organic producers in the entire world during 2012, nearly 6 lakh (i.e. roughly 32 percent) are from India (see below figure 1 and link). But a grim fact is that while the rest of the world is witnessing a rise in area under organic farming, in India area under such farming is shrinking.</div><div style="text-align: justify">&nbsp;</div><div style="text-align: justify">&nbsp;</div><div style="text-align: justify">&nbsp;</div><div style="text-align: justify">&nbsp;</div><p style="text-align: justify"><strong>Figure 1: World: The countries with the highest number of organic producers 2012</strong></p><p style="text-align: justify"><img src="https://im4change.in/siteadmin/tinymce/uploaded/Organic%20agriculture%20producers.jpg" alt="Organic agriculture producers" width="689" height="442" /></p><p style="text-align: justify">India has nearly 0.5 million hectares organic agricultural land, which is much lower as compared to China (1.9 million hectares). If organic agricultural land is added with land under wild collection, then available total organic area in India is 52 lakh hectares during 2012. Details on land use are not available for some countries with large organic agricultural areas like India, Australia and Brazil, as per the report. </p><p style="text-align: justify">The report cautions that although in many countries from Africa and Europe organic farming land grew (as compared with 2011), such land in Asia decreased by almost 0.5 million hectares to 3.2 million hectares in 2012 thanks to a decline in such land in India. Between 2011 and 2012, India lost 5.84 lakh hectares organic agricultural land-a decline of roughly 54 percent. Table 1 shows that although organic agricultural land in the world rose between 2009 and 2012, in the case of India it declined (except in 2011). As per latest available figures, a meagre 0.28 percent of total land is devoted to organic agriculture in India.</p><p><strong style="text-align: justify">Table 1:  Organic agricultural land in India and the world (in lakh hectares)</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align: justify"><img src="https://im4change.in/siteadmin/tinymce/uploaded/Table%201_2.jpg" alt="Table" width="532" height="166" /></p><p style="text-align: justify">The report also says that apart from 6 lakh organic producers, India has 699 organic processors and 669 organic exporters. It has 5977 organic producers (mostly small and marginal farmers) who are involved in Participatory Guarantee Systems, which are locally-focused quality assurance systems.                 <div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">A new report entitled: <em>The World of Organic Agriculture: Statistics and Emerging Trends 2014</em> by Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) says that out of the 19 lakh organic producers in the entire world during 2012, nearly 6 lakh (i.e. roughly 32 percent) are from India (see below figure 1 and link). Between 2011 and 2012, India lost 5.84 lakh hectares organic agricultural land-a decline of roughly 54 percent. Table 1 shows that although organic agricultural land in the world rose between 2009 and 2012, in the case of India it declined (except in 2011).
