                <strong>Victory for MP Dam Protesters</strong></h1>

The Congress, the main opposition party in the state, had jumped into the fray and a team from the Central Government was scheduled to visit the site.<br /><br />The water level of the Omarkeshwar Dam, part of the Narmada Valley Project, built by the Narmada Hydrolectric Development Corporation, had been increased from 189 metres to 193 metres on 25th August. This would have submerged an estimated 30 villages and adversely affect the livelihood of about 52,000 people.&nbsp; The enhancement of water level was carried out without rehabilitating those who have lost their land to earlier submergence.<br /><br />A three-member committee has been set up to look into the demands of the dam oustees.<br /><br />A similar protest was on near the Indira Sagar dam too to demand that water level in that dam be brought down from 262 meters to 260 meters.
