-The Hindu

Costing Rs.37, 000 with DRDA grant of Rs.9, 000

The first ‘zero waste toilet system' (ZWTS) in the country was inaugurated at Evoor village near Musiri on Thursday by Collector Jayashree Muralidharan.

This is an integrated urine diversion biogas linked flush toilet system and has five modules-a flush out toilet, a bathroom, a urine diversion bowl, a cultivated wetland for treating bathroom water, and a biogas plant.

The Collector said that the State government is according priority for liquid and solid waste management and wanted public to put an end to open defecation and follow environment-friendly solid waste management practices.

She said that in the past three months 358 women sanitary complexes in (WSC) the district have been renovated at a cost of Rs.10 crore and handed over to SHG groups for maintenance. More WSCs will be constructed if there was demand from villagers. She also appealed to people to desist from using low-grade plastic since it caused serious damage to soil, water and environment.

M. Subburaman, director, SCOPE, said that his organisation bears the initiative of building the first zero waste toilet system in the country which was constructed in the house of Thalapathy, a progressive farmer of Evoor village.

The cost was Rs.37,000 with an own contribution of Rs.10,000, and Rs. 9,000 as grant from District Rural Development Agency and Rs.18,000 from Indian Bank, Musiri as loan. The user-friendly ZWTS provided the family with a flush out toilet, urine for irrigating the farm, biogas for cooking and slurry from the biogas unit which was excellent manure.

No waste was generated in the ZWTS and all waste were converted into environment-friendly products, said A. James, water and sanitation consultant, New Delhi.

G. Anand, Solution Centre, Cochin, said the ZWTS was the entry of Benjamin Clouet and it won the first prize in the International Sanitation Innovation Contest organised by FINISH, New Delhi.

A book on SCOPE's journey in sanitation and ECOSAN published by WASTE of the Netherlands authored by V. Ganapathy, journalist, was released on the occasion by Ms.Muralidharan.

Ms. Shanthi Paramasivam, president of the Evoor panchayat, also spoke.
