However, major portion of the organic waste of the total of 800 metric tonne generated in the city comes from households. At least 80 big housing societies on over 20,000 square metre of area have been asked to set up their own waste converter plants of around 2 MT capacity. &lt;br /&gt;

&amp;quot;Process is underway by many of these housing societies to set up their own converter plants to produce compost. Smaller housing societies have also been asked to set up small plants for compost production,&amp;quot; municipal commissioner M Thennnarasan said.&lt;br /&gt;

Small plants are being set up at municipal vegetable, flower and fruit markets in the city.<br /><br />SMC has set up 10 small organic waste converter plants to process dry leaves, rotten vegetables, fruits and flowers to compost. These plants which have capacity up to 200 kg per day have been set up at 10 market places across the city to convert organic waste to compost.<br /><br />However, major portion of the organic waste of the total of 800 metric tonne generated in the city comes from households. At least 80 big housing societies on over 20,000 square metre of area have been asked to set up their own waste converter plants of around 2 MT capacity. <br /><br />&quot;Process is underway by many of these housing societies to set up their own converter plants to produce compost. Smaller housing societies have also been asked to set up small plants for compost production,&quot; municipal commissioner M Thennnarasan said.<br /><br />SMC believes organic waste can be put to use and this would help reduce the volume of waste by 40 per cent in the city. At present 600 MT of waste is being taken to Khajod for converting organic waste to a useful product. These plants which have capacity up to 200 kg per day have been set up at 10 market places across the city to convert organic waste to compost.<br /><br />However, major portion of the organic waste of the total of 800 metric tonne generated in the city comes from households. At least 80 big housing societies on over 20,000 square metre of area have been asked to set up their own waste converter plants of around 2 MT capacity. <br /><br />&quot;Process is underway by many of these housing societies to set up their own converter plants to produce compost. Smaller housing societies have also been asked to set up small plants for compost production,&quot; municipal commissioner M Thennnarasan said.<br /><br />SMC believes organic waste can be put to use and this would help reduce the volume of waste by 40 per cent in the city. Surat Municipal Corporation starts converting organic waste to compost

-The Times of India SURAT: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has started the process to convert organic waste generated in the city to compost and vermin compost. Small plants are being set up at municipal vegetable, flower and fruit markets in the city. SMC has set up 10 small organic waste converter plants to process dry leaves, rotten vegetables, fruits and flowers to compost. These plants which have capacity up to 200 kg per day have been set up at 10 market places across the city to convert organic waste to compost. However, major portion of the organic waste of the total of 800 metric tonne generated in the city comes from households. At least 80 big housing societies on over 20,000 square metre of area have been asked to set up their own waste converter plants of around 2 MT capacity. "Process is underway by many of these housing societies to set up their own converter plants to produce compost. Smaller housing societies have also been asked to set up small plants for compost production," municipal commissioner M Thennnarasan said. SMC believes organic waste can be put to use and this would help reduce the volume of waste by 40 per cent in the city. At present 600 MT of waste is being taken to Khajod for converting organic waste to a useful product. Meanwhile, Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) has a 50 tonne plant for waste conversion in the city. "We would be able to use most of the organic waste generated in our city from the coming few months.
