The extreme rains and devastation in Uttarakhand are possibly India's worst climate change disaster. It not only calls into question the entire ‘development' model that India is pursuing as man-made hydro-electric power projects have compounded the disaster along with irregular construction. Needless to say that the beneficiaries from the power projects have gotten away scot free while the most marginalized communities who faced the consequences of dams and other 'development' projects have, in addition, borne the brunt of climate change.

Is the Uttarakhand disaster due to global warming? What is the basic science of climate change? Where do the roots of global warming lie? What other impacts are already being felt in India? How do the issues of climate change specifically impact women?

In order to explore these and other questions, we are having a discussion meeting in the Saheli office on Saturday 6th July 2013 at 4pm. Nagraj Adve will initiate the discussion. He is part of India Climate Justice, a collective of social movements, unions and other organizations. His presentation will be followed by a discussion, questions, responses, your own thoughts, etc.
