Bhagalpur: Sanju Devi (55), a resident of Tailath village in Khagaria district, had never thought that her innovative practices in farming on a small piece of land near her house would fetch her laurels and hog the limelight at the Kisan Mela 2016 organized by Bihar Agricultural University (BAU) at Sabour in Bhagalpur district.

Sanju grows high-yielding vegetables, including mushrooms, rears honeybees and runs poultry by adopting integrated farming, the technical term she may not be aware of, embraced on the basis of her practical knowledge gained over the years.

She has also been instrumental in motivating other women in the locality to adopt integrated farming. At present, nearly 60 women of her village are engaged in honeybee rearing and other farm activities that have changed their lives.

It may be mentioned here that the Kisan Mela at BAU was inaugurated by CM Nitish Kumar on Friday.

Nitish Kumar was amazed by the display of farm produce, including large-sized vegetables, and listened to innovative farmers, especially women farmers. "It is remarkable and other women should also be made aware of the practice adopted by Sanju Devi," the CM said while praising her efforts.

Another innovative woman farmer, Madhumala Bhartiya of Madhepura, also hogged limelight at the Kisan Mela for adding Rs 25,000-30,000 per month to the family kitty by growing and selling medicinal and aromatic plants and flowers.

Similarly, Julie Devi, a resident of Choti Sardho, Sabour, was also lauded for adopting scientific approach in goat rearing and creating awareness among farmers about controlling goat diseases and vaccinations for better livestock farming.

The story of innovative farmers does not end here. Altogether 23 innovative farmers, including women, who brought changes in their socio-economic condition besides becoming a role model in their respective villages and areas, were lauded and honoured at the three-day Kisan Mela that ended on Sunday evening.
