Margao: Perhaps for the first time since it was established in 2006, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in Margao, has undertaken demonstration of newer varieties of paddy in its farm on a large scale, thereby signifying its shift from its earlier role of sustaining and supporting agriculture in the state to research and innovation.

In all, 11 new varieties of paddy are currently undergoing testing in Margao and initial findings have shown that some of the varieties have potential to replace the usual 'Jaya' and 'Jyothi' varieties which have remained the Goan farmers' favourites.

Sampada, Pratyasa, Vaishaka, Samyuktha, Makom, Naveen, Kanchana, Aishwarya, Warangal, Kunju Kunju Varna, Somasila, are the names of the 11 crops under trial.

KVK farm manager Sharif Furtado told TOI, "Some of the varieties do have the potential to replace traditional varieties. Any change in farmers' preference will be known only after they try such varieties in their fields and satisfy themselves with the performance," Furtado said, adding that the crop is due for harvesting.

Three of the varieties tested - Vaishaka, Samyukta and Aishwarya - were found to be suited to Goan climate for fodder for dairy animals, as the crop is over a meter long. The harvesting should be done by conventional manual methods without using the paddy combine harvestor, Furtado said.

"The Kanchana variety was found to be high-yielding among the 11 varieties as more grains are seen on the panicle. The actual yield will be seen only after harvesting the crop. The Vaishaka and Pratyasa varieties have exhibited good panicle length. Almost all the varieties are short duration crops," Furtado told TOI.

The 11 varieties undertaken for demonstration were sown by SRI (system of rice intensification) method of cultivation, billed as a result-oriented technology currently introduced by the state directorate of agriculture.

"The conventional method of sowing yields 35 quintals per hectare while this SRI method of paddy cultivation gives around 70 quintals per hectare," Furtado explained.

To further test the effectiveness of the new paddy varieties, interested farmers will be encouraged to sow the varieties in their own fields, following which varieties which display good results will be chosen for frontline demonstration and seed multiplication.

Head of KVK, Margao, and programme coordinator, Ulhas Pai Kakode acknowledged that research had taken a backseat at the KVK over the years as people had shunned agriculture as a direct consequence of the mining boom. "Following the closure of mining, we have observed that fallow areas are increasingly being brought under cultivation, and youth are also turning to farming. Introduction of mechanized harvesting at subsidized rates to the farmers has also provided desired results. As a consequence, our focus has turned back to research," Kakode told TOI.
