BELAGAVI: At a time when the state is witnessing a spate of farmers' suicides owing to mounting debts and crop failure, a group of 12 landless farmers in Geddalabavihatti village in Belagavi taluk are writing a success story with hard work and a never-say-die attitude.

When they decided to take up farming on about 45 acres of barren land owned by the state government about four years ago, it was a risk they were willing to take. Working as bonded-labourers for years together, they struggled to raise money for their dream venture. They knocked the doors of several banks, but in vain.

At last, they found a glimmer of hope in Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) which offered loans to them though they did not have proper documents to prove the land's ownership. "Our ancestors have been cultivating on this land for ages. However, we did not have any documents as the land is owned by the state government. When we approached nationalized banks for loans, they refused a loan citing lack of sufficient documents to prove the land's ownership. Finally, SKDRDP came to our rescue," said Basavaraj Shettappa Nesaragi, a farmer.

The farmers formed two self-help groups of six members each- Shri Pandurang and Shri Basaveshwar- to avail the loans. They managed to pool in Rs 5.5 lakh with an interest rate of 9%. "We adopted a multi-crop farming system. We planted 1,800 alphonso mango saplings and cultivated crops like maize and jowar. While it will take another two years for the mango trees to produce fruits, we are making money from the other crops. We have already repaid Rs 2 lakh to SKDRDP," Nesaragi added.

"We never compromised on watering the plants. We have to travel miles to get water. We bring water on bicycles and in bullock carts. It is our collective responsibility and we take turns to water the plants," he added.
