Some CRPF jawans in the Jungle Mahal have embarked on a new operation, but in classrooms.

The force has started English coaching centres in half a dozen primary schools in the rebel-infested zone as part of its exercise to improve relations with villagers.

The centres were opened on April 8 in six schools in Buripala, Pirakata, Patharkumkumi, Deuldanga and Satpati in Salboni and Jhitka in Lalgarh.

A CRPF officer said since the situation in the area was “under control” after the death of rebel leader Kishan and because of intense raids by the joint forces, the decision to start English coaching classes on Sundays and other holidays was taken.

“Since the beginning of the Lalgarh movement, the villagers of Jungle Mahal have suffered the fallout of Maoist activities. Now, the situation is largely under control and we think the security forces should have a better rapport with the villagers. So, we have decided to coach students of primary schools in English,” the officer said.

The initiative for the coaching centres was taken by CRPF commandant Shankarlal Sengupta and his wife.

“We have started coaching centres in six schools now. We will open centres in eight more primary schools in Salboni and Lalgarh within the next two months,” Sengupta said.

Since the classes are held on holidays, the 350-odd students in the primary schools will also be provided meals.

Children at some of the centres said they were excited to learn the language.

“I was scared to learn English. The police uncles are teaching well and I have started developing an interest. I did not know umbrella means chhata. I know many such English words now,” said Shibu Mahato, a Class III student of Buripala primary school.

Rina Mahato, a Class IV student, said the CRPF men had gone door to door to encourage children to come to school on Sundays and holidays.

“My mother initially asked me to stay at home and help her with work. But after the police uncles came and spoke to my mother, she agreed to send me to the coaching centre. I am enjoying the classes very much,” Rina said.

The jawans also appeared to be enjoying their new role. “It is a relief after days of raids and operations,” CRPF constable Babla Chatterjee said.
