A retired IPS officer in Bihar JK Sinha has set up a free English-medium residential school to educate 200 young Musahar boys. It's a big step for the tribe which is one of the state's most backward communities.
Every morning, the national anthem instills pride and courage in 120 inmates of the residential school.

One of the students Pankaj said, "This school gives us all the basic amenities that a student deserves."

From helping his farmer-father at home, Rahul Kumar has moved on to honing his English writing and debating skills and he can't thank his stars enough for the English-medium education that comes free of cost.

"In my village there are still some who only drink and squabble with their wives. They also don't send their kids to study," Rahul said.

Apart from imparting quality education, the school aims at making the backward Musahars a part of mainstream society.

"You will find that these students are particularly good in science, in maths and of course Hindi. It takes a little time for them to learn spoken English but their written English is something which any parents would be proud of," Sinha said.

One small initiative by an individual has affected hundreds of lives for good and when these catalysts of change walk out of this institution, the ripple effect it would cause within the Musahar Community is expected to change the social and economic dynamics of the community at large.

Post-retirement, J K Sinha decided to do something constructive for the Musahar community and he set out building this other family of his. A multi-tasker, Sinha is at ease teaching, serving food and supervising operations, and now plans to develop it into a full-fledged boarding school for 2000 students.

Sinha said, "We have acquired by God's grace two acres of land and now it's a challenge to build a school with all the necessary facilities."

J K Sinha brings hope to Rahul Kumar and hundred others like him and it is this one man's vision that has helped give a new meaning to the lives of the boys from the Musahar community.
