Teachers are running the school with the help of sponsors

At a time when government primary schools are being closed down in many districts in the State owing to lack of students, this one in Devalapur village, on the outskirts of Sirguppa town in Bellary district, has become a model of sorts.

The school provides the best infrastructure for its students and has managed to attract children from the lower strata of the society — mostly children of agricultural labourers.

It was set up in 2002 for children of migrant labourers from Andhra Pradesh. After the harvest, the labourers returned and the Government was planning to close it down in 2003.

However, the teachers decided to continue to run it with the help of local people and philanthropists.

“Today, we offer classes from first to fifth standard, and we have 150 students”, M. Venkatesh, Head Master (incharge), toldThe Hindu.

Apart from ensuring discipline, students attend special coaching classes during vacation for entrance exams such as those held by Morarji Desai Residential schools. “Eight students passed the entrance tests held by Morarji Desai Residential schools this year,” he said.

The school organises periodical meetings of parents and teachers, and parents are also asked to participate in the annual sports meet.

As of now, there are three posts for teachers and one is lying vacant. The shortage was managed with parents contributing towards the salary for the temporary staff. “The taluk panchayat is giving salary for the computer instructor,” he says. The Deputy Director of Public Instruction and Block Education Officer have promised to fill the vacant post during the current academic year and another two teachers would be appointed, he added.

Mr. Venkatesh said philanthropists were sponsoring the uniform, ties and shoes for students in Class 1.
