NEW DELHI: Launching the 'Housing for All' scheme last June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said a house is a "turning point" in the lives of the poor, which leads towards a better life. Now a government study on the benefits of houses for the poor in villages reveals how a pucca (concrete) house elevates status of the family and even plays a key role in marriages.

The study on impact of housing on the lives of rural people, conducted by IIM-Ranchi, across Saranda region of West Singhbhum district in Jharkhand has also found how 44% of those who received government assistance to build houses invested additional funds of their own for constructing better dwelling units.

The Union Cabinet is yet to clear the proposal of building three crore houses for the rural poor, though it has announced to provide roof to all across the country by 2022. So far, only the scheme to provide two crore houses for the urban poor has been launched.

Government sources said the IIM study also found how people developed the habit of savings and focussed more on children's education once they got houses. The study report was submitted to the rural development ministry. Houses for the poor in this region were built under the Indira Awas Yojna (IAY).

"A proper house played an important role while taking decisions regarding marriages and villagers near the state borders had reported that IAY had led to a perception of their status getting elevated," said an official.
