NEW DELHI: After cities like Bhopal and Nagpur, it’s Delhi’s turn to go green by at least partially replacing firewood used in cremation with gobar kashth — wood-like dry blocks made from cattle dung.

Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), which inspected the Goyla dairy in south Delhi last week, has asked South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) to utilise cattle dung from dairy colonies to manufacture these dry blocks, a veterinary department official said.

To control methane emission, SDMC has also been asked to discontinue the practice of wind-row composting of dung. The technique, the official added, was adopted as per the direction of Delhi Pollution Control Committee. “We used to pile cattle dung in rows and turn them upside down every week to increase the pace of composting. Manure in this process gets ready in around a month,” he said.

The CPCB team will visit Bhopal to gather more inputs about the process of turning cattle dung into ‘mock wood’ and will guide SDMC. Many cities in India have been trying to replace wood at cremation grounds. In Nagpur, the corporations supply gau kashth for cremations. But the city uses straw, chaff and biodegradable materials to make 3-foot-long blocks, while in Jaipur and Gwalior, only cow dung is used.

The move, if successful, will not only help in solving the waste problem but also save lakhs of trees, which are being annually used at Delhi’s cremation grounds.

As per the 19th Livestock Census of India, each cattle produces 10-15kg of dung every day. With no proper disposal procedure, most of it ends up in the Yamuna through drains. South Delhi alone has five planned dairy colonies — three authorised colonies in Goyla (11,000 animals), Nangli (7,000) and Kakrola (3,500) and two DUSIB dairies with 4,500 animals. While two dairy colonies are in north corporation areas, the biggest such facility in the city falls under East Delhi Municipal Corporation. There are also five Delhi government-run gaushalas.

Despite several interventions by courts and introduction of new technologies, 95% of cremations — around 80,000 — in Delhi are wood-based traditional funerals, said a public health official. Each of these uses 400-500kg wood, requiring over 3.6 crore kg wood — equivalent to 4 lakh trees — every year. Mokshda, an NGO working in the sector, found in a survey of 3,000 cremation grounds that on average, an Indian tree yields 80-100kg wood.
