Mother-child healthcare improves, thanks to ICDS

Salem (Tamil Nadu): The successful functioning of the anganwadi centres being run under Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) have helped over 3.18 lakh children to improve their healthcare in the district.

Officials said that there are 2,696 anganwadi centres in all the 22 blocks in the district. Supplementary nutrition, immunisation, health check-up, referral services, pre-school non-formal education and nutrition and health education are rendered to adolescent girls in the age group of 11 to 19, ante-natal and postnatal mothers, children between 0 to 36 months and children between 2 and 5 years.

Supplementary feeding is given to 83,070 children of 6 to 36 months, 19,416 ante-natal women and to 18,020 post-natal mothers. Variety rice noon meal and eggs are provided to 60,037 children in the age group of 2 to 5 and eggs are given to 27,493 children in the age group of 1 to 2.

The Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Empowerment of Adolescent Girls – SABLA scheme that concentrates in providing life skills and job-oriented vocational training is provided to adolescent girls. Officials said that between 2011-2015, the scheme had benefitted 2,61,093 children, 81,842 pregnant women, 75,682 feeding mothers, 3,18,158 children in the age group of 0 and 3, and 2,45,917 in the age group of 0 and 2.
