Kollam (Kerala): A scheme implemented by the district panchayat for the welfare and health care of pregnant Adivasi women and infants is turning out to be a model for other districts, district panchayat president S. Jayamohan has said.

Since the implementation of the scheme no infant mortality had been reported in the Adivasi belts of the district. Terming it ‘Kollam model,' Mr. Jayamohan said that providing nutritious food would be the prime thrust of the scheme. This year 60 pregnant women and their children were covered by the scheme and Rs.3.40 lakh was spent for it.

Kits containing nutritious food worth more than Rs.1,000 was being distributed through the scheme. The kits were being delivered without fail to even those Adivasi women living in deep forest areas. The distribution continued till the child was a year old. Scarcity of edible forest products was one of the main causes for the fall in nutrition levels among Adivasis. This had prompted the district panchayat to come out with the scheme, Mr. Jayamohan said. Apart from pregnant women and infants, the district panchayat was distributing nutritious food kits worth Rs.500 each to all Advisais who had crossed 60 years of age. Mobile hospital units were being sent to Adivasi areas to meet their medical requirements, he said.

No infant death reported in Adivasi belts in Kollam after the implementation of the project
