The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation will install machines and incinerators in 60 places across the city.

Women in Kerala’s capital - Thiruvananthapuram have a reason to cheer.

The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation will be installing sanitary napkin vending machines in various parts of the city in two weeks. It is an extension of its 2014 project, where the civic body had installed sanitary napkin vending machines in some schools.

The vending machines will be installed in as many as 60 places. This will include public places which have toilet facilities like the Central Railway Station, bus stations, shopping complexes and other key points in the city. Apart from these venues, vending machines will also be installed at the Government Medical College Hospital, General Hospital, SAT Hospital, Kanakakunnu, Ayurveda College Junction, Secretariat and Putharikandam Ground. The proposal also covers educational institutions such as All Saint’s College, Women’s Hostel of Medical College, Medical College Nursing Hostel, Government Law College and NSS College as well.

The Corporation will also install vending machines in more schools under its jurisdiction. Speaking to The News Minute, Deputy Mayor Rakhi Ravikumar said, “Rs 50 lakh has been earmarked for installing the vending machines in schools. Rs one crore has been set aside to launch the project in the rest of the city. The machines will be functional in a couple of weeks.”

The vending machines will be installed along with incinerators. The Corporation has tied up with premium condom manufacturer HLL Lifecare Limited for it. On inserting Rs 10 into the vending machine, a packet with three napkins will be come out of the slot.

In the first phase, each vending machine will be filled with 7000 napkins. The first 500 packets from each machine will be free. Last November sanitary napkin vending machine company, Vendigo and sanitary napkin incinerators were installed in 150 government and aided schools in the district by the District Panchayat in association with HLL Lifecare Ltd. In 2014 the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation installed the vending machines in some corporation schools, which was then extended to select government offices by the end of the year.
