Telengana: Empowered by disciplined thrift activity for close to two decades now, a group of enterprising women members of the Self Help Groups (SHGs) are charting a new course by entering male dominated domain of marketing agriculture produce directly to the processors.

The effort has paid off with the farmers in at least 10 mandals of Nizamabad and Adilabad district benefiting a lot. Thanks to the encouragement by Gram Abhyudaya Mandali (GRAM), an NGO working in the two districts since 1979, thrift group members are on a song.

With as many as 3,800 SHGs with membership of over 50,000, forming Mutually Aided Cooperative Societies (MACS) was the next natural step. And it is the Mandal MACS going by the name of Intideepam Producers MACS to be reorganised as iProMacs that has brought cheers to the farming community.

“I was taking my soya beans to Dharmabad market in Maharashtra in a hired mini van for Rs, 1,800, but on the way I heard procurement was going on at Dagaon village. I off loaded my produce there and sent back the mini van paying him Rs. 600, because I got a better price and saved on transport. MACS are doing good work but without publicity,” is how Bhumanna, a farmer from Hangin village in Tanur mandal in Adilabad district reacted after he got a good deal. “Other than better price directly from processors we have saved Rs. 40 per quintal on transport to Bhainsa market,” Sarappa, another farmer from Dagaon village in Tanur mandal said.

The success story does not end here as Velpur Gangaram, a farmer of Donkeswar village in Nandipet mandal puts it. “I sold 15.63 quintals of soya through MACS in my village itself and earned Rs.1,654 additionally compared to Nizamabad market. Fifty per cent of this Rs. 827 is now credited to my wife’s share amount in MACS. Next year all farmers will sell through MACS only,” he asserted.

Success did not come so easily as Bengevar Suvarna, President of Madhnoor MACS in Nizamabad district recalls. “We hesitantly and with lots of fear entered the market and facilitated selling 20 tonnes of soya bean directly to factories in Nanded,” she said.

Equally excited is Bhojabai, President of Bhainsa MACS, who says their efforts won appreciation from the men. “Sarpanchas are calling us and asking us to extend market facilitation to many villages. We are working for the welfare of families, our aim is to enhance savings and create better price to producers rather than profits,” she noted.

The person behind all this N. Samson, founder of Gram Abhyudaya Mandali said: “The MACS women in Nizamabad and Adilabad districts have discovered their real potential identity as producers. Agriculture market is traditionally a male dominated arena. MACS have started facilitating agri-produce marketing directly to processors. The resultant saving of bypassing commission agents and traders is a new opportunity of saving that can replace traditional monthly cash saving, he remarked.
