New Delhi: The online booking system at the AIIMShas picked up pace after the administration made the option of booking available to patients through their Aadhaar numbers.

The facility was launched by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on May 7. Once the patient seeking an appointment enters the Aadhaar number or Unique Identification Number (UID), the personal details will be traced and the Unique HealthIdentification Number (UHID) will be alloted by the AIIMS.

The response has improved by around 50 per cent after the new facility which integrates Aadhaar number given by government to the UHID introduced by the hospital.

“Currently, there are at least 200 bookings across all Outdoor Patient Departments (OPDs) every day after the new facility went online. This is a 50 per cent improvement observed in the online booking system,” said Dr Deepak Aggarwal, Neurosurgeon & In-Charge of the IT wing, AIIMS.

The hospital has seen the maximum number of bookings from patients hailing from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in last 25 days, he said.

Even though the patients can take the appointments online, the waiting period in dermatology, medicine, ENT, orthopaedics and eye departments is between two weeks to three months, according to a senior doctor.

Maximum rush

“These five departments have the maximum rush. Appointments for the other departments are available the same week,” said the doctor.

The hospital will now introduce online payment within the next few days. This system will sync the payment gateway of the existing online booking procedure.

“Patients will be able to pay the amount of Rs 10 which they have to deposit at the OPD through the payment gateway once the existing facility is integrated with it,” said Dr Aggarwal.

Earlier, the online OPD registration had managed to draw very few patients.

Till now, patients were given the identification number who have visited the hospital at least once. Those who have never visited the hospital, could also take appointments and make cancellations through the patient portal system in the AIIMS website or through the recently launched mobile application. However, patients were given only temporary identification numbers through this facility.
