In order to reduce mother mortality rate (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR), the district administration had launched ‘Amma Lalana' (Mother's Nurture) programme of providing better medicare to pregnant women and new born by tracking them for intervention needed through SMS alerts.

Initially, the programme was launched in 25 primary health centres by feeding the information of the pregnant women along with her cellular phone number or husband's phone and respective ANM and Anganwadi worker to ensure that the pregnant women visit PHC for check-up and treatment.

Incidentally, the launch of Amma Lalana informing pregnant women about ante-natal check-up and alerting her to visit the hospital in advance for delivery etc. had helped in increase of institutional deliveries in government hospitals. Statistics provided by authorities say that there were 3,500 ante-natal check-ups in September this year against 2,500 in 2010. Similarly, there were 3,640 check-ups in October 2011 compared to 2,450 check-ups in October 2010.

The PHCs such as in Saidapur, Medipally, Keshavapatnam and Gollapalli, which have never conducted any delivery in their hospital, conducted deliveries with the introduction of Amma Lalana programme and SMS alerts to pregnant women. The deliveries have increased to 102 in government area hospital in Jagtial and the number was considerable in Korutla area hospital.

The Amma Lalana programme was also aimed to reduce the alleged exploitation of rural masses by private hospitals in the district and instil confidence about government hospital by encouraging only normal deliveries.

Surprisingly, there has been about 89 per cent institutional deliveries in the district against the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) goal of 90 per cent. Now, the district ranks number one in the entry of pregnant women in computers to send SMS alerts in the state. The Karimnagar had enrolled 18,813 pregnant women when compared to a total of 2.04 lakh in entire State.

Collector Smita Sabharwal told The Hindu on Sunday that they would soon introduce the SMS alert system in the remaining 46 PHCs and cover the entire district and reduce MMR and IMR. She said that they were planning to track the health of the new born for a period of five years by sending SMS alerts to mothers about periodic immunisation and vaccination of her child.
