Chennai: Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar said the State stood first in the country with respect to harvest of organs.

With seven years’ of experience in organ and transplant programme, the State is now looking to better its achievement by actively involving more government hospitals.

At present only a handful of government hospitals across the State perform transplant surgeries, whereas the contribution by private hospitals has been significant. Releasing the annual report of cadaver transplant programme of the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu, Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar said the State stood first in the country with respect to harvest of organs. “The government is very keen to ensure that none suffers from non-availability of organs for transplant and best medical care is made available to the poorest of the poor. This is our firm commitment,” he said.

The success of the programme was due to the open system the State had in place to clear bottlenecks, the active support of the non-governmental organisations and the grief counsellors to run the programme, said health secretary J. Radhakrishnan.

Way forward

The next step is to involve more government hospitals and scale up donations per day. “The aim now is to ensure skin supply to more burns victims; set up a regional tissue bank; an immunology laboratory and initiate a regional data bank,” Dr. Radhakrishnan said.

Emeritus Professor from the University of Brisbane Russell Walker Strong took the audience through a journey of the birth of surgical transplantation. Though transplant has been found in Greek and Indian literature and had been attempted time and again, the general perception among the public has always been scepticism.

Even when he began split liver transplant in Australia there was much cynicism. Yet, his pioneering work had enabled children he had operated on to live and etch a career or start their own family, he recalled.
