PANAJI: Over 2.50 lakh students are enrolled in Goa's schools from Class I to XII, but facilities like playgrounds and usable urinals are still lacking in the state's institutions, reveals the eighth all India school education survey of the National council of educational research and training ( NCERT), released this week.

Only 460 primary schools have a playground of the 1,024 institutions in Goa and only 739 have a usable urinal. Of the close to 400 secondary schools in Goa, 343 have a usable urinal but only 276 have the luxury of a playground.

Unlike most of the country, Goa though provides drinking water facility in nearly all of its schools.

There are 1,220 habitations identified in Goa of which only 686 have a primary school located within the residential area and 248 have an upper primary school within the habitation. In the case of 252 habitations, a school is located beyond a distance of one kilometer from the habitation and another close to 300 upper primary schools in Goa are located beyond three kilometers of a habitation, according to the survey.

From Classes I to V, 1.27 lakh students are enrolled in the 872 government, 45 private aided and 109 private unaided schools in the state, but as many as 266 of these primary schools operate with a single teacher.

The enrollment in urban institutions in Goa is much more than that in rural schools indicating the clear preference for city schools. Around 50,000 students are studying in primary schools located in villages in Goa but over 70,000 are enrolled in urban schools.

As against the 26,000 students studying in rural schools from Classes VI to VIII, over 40,000 are studying in urban institutions. A similar trend is visible in secondary and higher secondary schools. The eighth survey covers the period from 2002 to 2009.
