As agriculture-related activities come to a standstill with the summer season reaching its peak, around 1,300 labourers and farmers in the rural areas have registered themselves for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). The MGNREGS guarantees job for 100 days with daily remuneration.

As many as 81 projects have been initiated in Pune district and the administration is planning to commence at least 100 more projects in the next couple of days.

The state government had recently asked all district administrations to speed up the MGNREGS works as it was an income tool for families and poor labourers from rural areas.

A circular issued by the government has stated that the public works department was not serious enough in undertaking projects under the MGNREGS. The number of works started so far were very few and the overall volume of work was way below the expected target, it said.

Pune district collector Vikas Deshmukh said, "The number of labourers registered has gone up from 450 to 1,300 in the last 15 days. We hope around 100 projects will be commenced in the district this week. We have asked every gram panchayat to prepare work proposals worth at least Rs 40 lakh under the MGNREGS. Projects such as construction of farm roads, approach roads to farms, forest roads, digging of channels, road up to primary health centre, etc, are expected to be undertaken". Deshmukh said chief executive officer of Pune zilla parishad has been given Rs 1 crore to initiate works.

In last few years, the district has shown poor response to the EGS and MREGS schemes. Low daily wages as compared to that of private undertakings and availability of other income options were said to the prime reasons. Besides, several projects have remained incomplete due to labourers remaining absent from work.
