The state government has decided to bring two lakh nomadic Gujjar and Bakerwal families in Jammu and Kashmir under the Public Distribution System (PDS).

“Temporary ration cards will be issued to the nomadic Gujars and Bakerwals so that they could get ration while migrating from one place to another without any difficulty,” Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD), Qamar Ali Akhoon told Greater Kashmir on Sunday.

He said that divisional commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu have been asked to finalize the lists of genuine beneficiaries in this regard, at the earliest. “It was a long pending demand of the communities as they were not receiving benefits of the different schemes launched by the government for the BPL families”, the minister said.

The nomadic Gujjars and Bakarwals, who have been leading a nomadic life for centuries, face number of challenges in the recent years.

Pertinently, late Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah during his tenure had started a scheme to rehabilitate the twin communities but at that time a very few families could take the benefit of the rehabilitation policy.

There are nearly 25 lakh gujjars and bakerwals in the state, who stay in Kashmir region, Rajouri, Poonch and some southern districts.
Meanwhile, sources said that Government has decided to formulate a new dealership policy to end rampant corruption which has crept deep in the PDS system.

“A detailed system is being planned after studying the distribution system of other states.

Government is also planning to establish Liquefied Petroleum Gas agencies at each block of the state to provide cooking gas to the people at their doorsteps. The allotment of gas agencies would be made in a transparent way through draw of lots”, said a CAPD official.
