BAREILLY (U.P.): After a Bareilly-based activist filed a complaint with National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) that there are nearly 2 lakh malnutrition children in the state and the government is not taking appropriate steps in the matter, the commission has directed UP chief secretary to take appropriate action in the matter and submit an action-taken report in four weeks.

Rajesh Chaudhary, a Bareilly-based activist, had lodged a complaint with NHRC on November 15 last year that there are nearly 2 lakh malnourished children in 29 districts of UP.

"I learnt through various media reports that 29 districts in the state have been categorised in red zone. In Bareilly district, there are around 20,000 malnourished children. However, these children are struggling to survive due to apathy of the government. The state government is wasting funds by celebrating Diwali in a grand manner at Ayodhya while the same budget can be utilised in saving the lives of these 2 lakh malnourished children," Choudhary wrote in his complaint.

His complaint was placed before NHRC on December 15 last year and the commission recently forwarded the complaint of Chaudhary to the UP chief secretary. The panel also asked the chief secretary to submit an action-taken report within four weeks.

According to the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4) report of 2015-16, 46% of children under the age of five in UP are stunted, or too short for their age, which indicates that they have been undernourished for some time.

The report stated that 18% children in the state are wasted or too thin for their height which may result from inadequate recent food intake or a recent illness causing weight loss. The report revealed that 6% children in UP are severely wasted. Report said 40% kids in the state are underweight, which takes into account both chronic and acute undernutrition. Even during the first six months of life, when almost all babies are breastfed, 21% of children are stunted, 30% are underweight and 31% are wasted in the state, revealed report.
