Tezpur (Assam): Rains in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh and a rise in the water level of Solengi river has inundated at least 20 villages in Assam's Sonitpur district today.

An embankment of the Solengi river at Borghuli village was breached, affecting the neighbouring villages. Road communication between Gohpur and Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, was also hit due to floodwaters.

Ramen Bora, a resident of Kokila village, said the breach near Solengi river was not repaired by the water resources department despite repeated complaints.

He said more than 50 houses in the village were affected by floodwaters.

"If the rain starts again, the flood will affect our areas even more," he said.

According to the daily flood bulletin of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, 8,857 people have been affected by floodwaters in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Jorhat and Golaghat districts in the last 24 hours.

Nine relief camps have been set up in Dhemaji district where 2,227 flood-hit people are taking shelter.

The bulletin said farmlands in 12 villages under Majuli revenue circle and one in Samaguri were inundated by floodwaters.

According to the Central Water Commission, the Brahmaputra in Neematighat (Jorhat) and Dhubri and its tributary the Dhansiri were flowing above the danger level in Numaligarh in Dibrugarh district.
