GREATER NOIDA: Nearly 200 farmers , many of them partly clothed, courted arrest on Yamuna Expressway . The farmers planned to protest before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at theAsian Development Bank (ADB) summit in Greater Noida on Saturday . The agitators , who were on their way to the Expo Mart , were intercepted and taken to the police lines .

The protesters alleged that the cops bundled them into their vehicles after deflating the tyres of their tractors . The farmers are against privatization in sectors like water , electricity , education , and infrastructure , including roads and industries .

Several local farmers , who have been protesting against the Uttar Pradesh government's unfriendly policies , also joined the agitation . They demanded an increased compensation and developed plots for acquiring their land . The farmers who came in tractor-trolleys holding placards were stopped near Dankaur area . "Police then deflated the tyres of our tractors to stop us from getting to the summit ," said Manveer Bhati , a Kisan Sangharsh Samiti leader.

Agitators , however , gave police the slip and continued their march on foot. After covering nearly 2km , they were again stopped near theSports City underpass on the expressway . As the protesters tried to go past the police cordon , they were surrounded by the security forces and personnel of the Provincial Armed Constabulary . "We were herded into buses and carted off to the police lines in Surajpur ," Bhati said .

Though the protesters wanted to be taken into judicial custody , they were let off by late evening after being detained for nearly 6 hours . "We had to keep them from disrupting the summit ," said Brijesh Kumar , superintendent of police , Greater Noida . "We detained the agitators till about 5pm," Kumar said .

The protesters blamed the UP government's indifference for the agitation . "We expected theSamajwadi Party government to spell relief for farmers , but to no avail . We decided to present our woes before the PM and delegates of the 67 countries participating in the summit ," said Jai Singh another farmer leader .

"The government and the Authority have forcefully acquired our land . We are left with no job opportunities in the absence of land rights . Now with this summit , we fear ADB will plan toinvest in infrastructure , including roads , water , power and industrial townships ," said Rajender Pradhan , a protester . "We will not allow things to be done in the garb of development ," said another protester . Farmers have now given the administration an ultimatum of three days after which they have threatened to stop work at the Sports City along Yamuna Expressway . "We will also block the e-way if our demands are not addressed ," Bhati said .

Authority officials said farmers were not being practical as their matter was pending before the UP government . "We are willing to talk to the farmers but first they need to suspend their agitation ," said an official .
