26 lakh TB patients in India; Nearly 42,000 died in 2013-14

NEW DELHI: There are around 26 lakh tuberculosis patients in India while the estimated mortality attributable to the disease is 2.4 lakh, minister of state for health Shripad Naik told Rajya Sabha on Thursday quoting estimates of World Health Organisation.

He also said the numbers of patients who died at Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) centres during the 2013-14 was 41,956.

"According to the World Health Organization, the estimated number of tuberculosis patients in the country is 26 lakh whereas the estimated mortality attributable to tuberculosis is 2.4 lakh," Naik said.

"As of May 2015, a total of 8,69,576 HIV/AIDS patient are receiving free Antiretroviral Therapy (ART). Number of patients reported died at ART centres during the last three financial years are 35,265 (2011-12), 29,466 (2012-13) and 41,956 (2013-14)," Naik said.

He said among the number of estimated deaths in Diabetes Mellitus was 1.0 lakh out of 378 lakh in 2004 while for Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD) in the same period was 5.5 lakh out of 224 lakh cases.

He said the government established over 13,000 designated microscopy centres for quality diagnosis of tuberculosis under the revised national Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) in the country since 2005.

Currently, there are 510 Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) centres and 1068 Link Antiretroviral Therapy (LAC) in the country and through them a total of 8,69,576 HIV/AIDS patients are receiving free of cost Antiretroviral Therapy.

Naik said that the trend of support under RNTCP is on the rise and during the last 3 years, Rs 1621 crores (aggregate) was released to the states under it.

He said that during the same period Rs 310.38 crore was also released to the state governments under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardio-vascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS).
