About 26 Indians "most of them from eastern UP" have been held hostage near Malaysian city Ipoh for over a week now. According to reports, the hostages have been confined to a room surrounded by hills covered with dense forests.

All that they are being given is rice, salt, a few biscuits to eat and water from flush tank to drink. Besides, they have been tied to each other so that they do not escape. They all had reportedly fallen victim to the lure of a placement agency in Gorakhpur which had charged Rs 80,000 from each of them for offering minor jobs in Malaysia.

A case has now been lodged against the Indian and Malaysian agents, the owner and manager of the Malaysian company where the victims were taken for jobs, at Shahpur police station in Gorakhpur. The complaint was lodged by Manoj Kumar Verma whose younger brother is among the hostages. Pintoo Kumar Verma, younger brother of Manoj, managed to contact his family through a mobile number 0060102780410 that they have been kept hostage in a room surrounded by hills. Besides these 26 Indians, about 10-15 other persons too have been held captive in the room, Pintoo told his family.

Quoting Pintoo, his brother-in-law Santosh Verma said victims were shifted from the company office to their current location on a bus (number PFT-5664) on Saturday.

He said the agent in Malaysia, probably a Pakistani, has asked the victims to make calls to their Indian agent Vashisht Tiwari as he had taken Rs 12 lakh from him in exchange of the victims.

The agent has told them that they would be released only after Vashisht returns the money, said Santosh quoting Pintoo. "They have been crying for help from us," he added.

Vashisht Tiwari was running a foreign placement agency near Vimal Montessori School in Shahpur police station of Gorakhpur. He had promised the victims some petty jobs like that of welder, pipe fitter and helper in Malaysia.

Vashisht arranged the passports and tourist visa for these persons and took them to Malaysia on May 18. After handing them over to T Aangulajamat Secondary Security company officials, he returned to India.

Things were fine till August 20, the day when the tourist visa of the victims expired. They asked the company officials about their salaries but the latter said all the money had been given to Vashisht Tiwari and the company didn't owe them anything. When the victims expressed their desire to leave for India, they were stopped and held hostage.

Pintoo anyhow contacted his family on August 25 and told them about their plight. Some of the hostages, according to Pintoo, are Dharmendra Gaur, Mintoo Verma, Sunil Kumar, all residents of Kushinagar, Ajeet Kumar Chauhan and Shrawan Kumar, both residents of Ballia, Sanjay Chaudhary, Manoj Kumar, Birju Mallah and Rajkumar Chaudhary of Kolkata.

Pintoo's brother Manoj has contacted Gorakhpur DIG Asim Arun who had ordered an FIR against Vashisht Tiwari, Malaysian placement agent and manager and owner of the company.

The DIG told TOI that the external affairs ministry had been informed about 26 Indians being kept hostage in Malaysia. The Indian embassy in Malaysia too has been informed.

Sources said following intervention of the foreign ministry, the matter was being investigated by the Indian embassy in Malaysia. The Non-resident Indian department in Malaysia too was looking into the complaints.About Vashisht, DIG said, efforts were on to nab him.
