The Supreme Court on Monday flayed the government over what it called a "casual" attempt by it to auction the 2G spectrum. Chiding the government for not complying with its order and letting "lower ranking officials" file affidavits in the matter, the apex court refused to take on record the Centre's affidavit that had been filed by an under secretary-level officer. The court directed that the affidavit must be filed by a secretary-level officer.

The SC further asked the government to explain why the entire 2G spectrum, licenses for which were cancelled by it, were not put up during the recent auction. It then directed the secretary of DoT to file an affidavit within two days mentioning if its judgement had been complied with.

Senior Supreme Court lawyer and anti-corruption campaigner Prashant Bhushan had filed an application a month ago stating that the government was not following the apex court's guidelines in auctioning the 2G spectrum.
