The Income Tax Department has handed over to the CBI tapes of a fresh set of an estimated 15,000 conversations of intercepted telephone calls which could widen the scope of the agency’s probe in the 2G scam and spell trouble for corporate lobbyist Niira Radia.

The 15,000 conversations involve two alleged Delhi-based hawala dealers Anil Bansal and R S Bansal whose phones were put on surveillance along with those of Radia and her associates in August 2008.

This comes weeks after the CBI told the Supreme Court that it had found no direct link between Radia and the 2G probe. Sources said this fresh set of intercepts is mostly linked to Radia’s alleged dealings with the Unitech group which obtained the 2G licence and is under the CBI’s scanner. Officials in the CBI confirmed the development and said that the apex court could be informed about this additional evidence.

Sources said the telephones of Radia, her associates and the Bansals were among 14 numbers put under surveillance in August 2008 since there was “a suspicion” that she was actively using the Bansals for facilitating business deals for her clients, including the Unitech group.

While the tap on the Bansals was discontinued after the stipulated period, the telephones of Radia were tapped again from May 2009 to July 2009.

Interestingly, while the tapes have only just been handed over to the CBI, the two alleged hawala dealers find mention in the confidential correspondence exchanged between the two Departments in 2009 and in internal status reports exchanged between the Director General of Income Tax (Investigations) and the Central Board of Direct Taxes.

In one report filed in July 2009, the I-T Department said that there are a series of conversations of the associates of Anil Bansal and R S Bansal and associates of Radia “suggesting” that the Unitech group, apart from others, had “suppressed” income and apparently taken out cash to the tune of “Rs 200 to Rs 300 crore under the guise of purchase of computer software from them.”
