AURANGABAD: Over 350 like-minded organizations are set to launch a nation-wide agitation from Monday to protest against the contentious Land Acquisition Bill. Social activist Medha Patkar made the announcement in the city while addressing a gathering of farmers. She said organizations of farmers, traders and fishermen would stage demonstration in different parts of the country and mount pressure on the Union government to stop it from going ahead with the bill.

The organizers of the agitation will also run a signature campaign and plan to reach out to as many as five crore citizens across the country. "We will make the citizens aware of the ill-intentions of the government. We will also educate the masses on the long-term negative effects of the bill on our agricultural society," Patkar said.

She said the 'anti-farmer' move of the Narendra Modi-led government would ruin lives of all those who are directly or indirectly associated with farming. "The government is trying to acquire land without taking the farmers and other stakeholders into confidence. In the name of development, the government is eyeing land banks. It seems that the step is being promoted to benefit corporate houses," she said.

Patkar said the government is planning to acquire about 17% of the total farming land in the country; a move that would affect a large number of farmers, agriculture workers, small traders and fishermen.

She also took a dig at Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari for not inviting her for open discussion on the issue. "I have been fighting for the cause of the farmers for the past many years, but Gadkari did not invite us. We want to take up the matter with the minister and highlight the consequences of the bill," she added.

Following opposition to the bill from various outfits, Gadkari recently wrote a letter to political leaders and social activists, including Congress president Sonia Gandhi and veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare-inviting them for an open debate on the legislation.

Talking about the prime minister's address to the farmers on Sunday, Patkar said Modi skipped the issue of farmers' suicide. "Unseasonal rains and hailstorm have destroyed crops all over and the farmers are committing suicides. However, the issue finds no mention in Modi's address," she said.
