4000 Families in Jharkhand Covered Under Tribal Development Fund

A Tribal Development Fund (TDF) of NABARD covered 4000 families in four horticultural projects sanctioned in the state of Jharkhand during 2008-’09 and 2009-’10. Mr. K V Thomas, the Union Minister of State for Agriculture informed Rajya Sabha the other day on May 7, 2010, the last day of the budget session of the parliament in reply to an un-starred question from the member Mr. Parimal Nathwani.

Mr. Nathwani had asked for details of financial assistance to the tribals under the tribal development projects for growing horticultural crops in the country including Jharkhand during last three years. The minister in his reply stated that a Tribal Development Fund was created by NABARD in 2004-05 with a corpus fund of Rs. 50 Crore for replication of small orchard approach of development to promote sustainable participatory livelihood programs in tribal predominated areas of the country.

He also informed that the horticulture crops covered under the TDF were mango, cashew, amla, passion fruit, litchi, arecanut, orange, pineapple, banana, papaya, sapota, pomegranate, lime, citrus, lemon, guava, acid-lime, sweet orange, custard-apple, nagachilli, jackfruit, clove and pepper. The minister informed further that upto 31st March, 2010, NABARD had sanctioned 191 projects in 22 states and union territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli; and Andaban & Nicobar at an outlay of Rs. 543.6 Crores covering 1.56 lacs tribal families.

Out of Rs. 543.6 Crores’ outlay; Rs. 512 Crores was the grant and Rs. 31.6 Crores was the loan; it was added.

The details presented by the minister also revealed that during 2008-’09 one project in Jharkhand was sanctioned covering 1000 families whereas in 2009-’10 three projects covering 3000 tribal families in Jharkhand were sanctioned.

According to the details submitted to the house, under a TDF project 500-1000 tribal families are covered with approximate coverage of 1000 acre of orchard plantation in clusters and the project duration ranges from 5-7 years. NABARD provides the grant @ Rs. 45000/- per family for the north-eastern states and Rs. 40000/- per family for other states.
