Five members of a farmer’s family attempted suicide at a land dealer’s residence in Dodar village of Sanand taluka of Ahmedabad district by consuming pesticide, on Monday.

The family has alleged that the land dealer, Vikram Fulabhai Solanki, an advocate, had duped them of their farmland spread over 15 bighas worth over Rs 5 crore, which he had refused to return.

The five have been identified as Mansinh Ramu Sandhav (70), Kalusinh Mansinh (55), his wife Jatan (50), Hamir Mansinh (50) and his wife Leela (38). They are residents of Kundal village and jointly own 28 bighas of farm land worth over Rs 10 crore in nearby Dodar.

Main accused Solanki of Dodar, and co-accused Digvijaysinh Vaghela of Kanoti, Prithvirajsinh Bhagubhai of Khoda, Prakashsinh Vijaysinh of Bahvnahth Society, Hiendra Vanraj Vaghela of Sanand and Mahavirsinh Vaghela of Godhav are all absconding, the police said.

Arjan Mansinh (55), son-in-law of Mansinh said: “This is our ancestral land, which we never wanted to sell. The land dealer and others forged the documents and got them stamped by the mamlatdar. Our original documents were also lying with the mamlatdar, but he still accepted the forged documents of the same land.”

He said the family learnt of the fraud this January when they sought the land records to facilitate a personal loan. The mamlatdar told them that the land was sold off in July 2010.

Arjan said: “We went to collect our documents in the mamlatdar office, but he refused to give them. After much requests, he gave the documents and informed us that the land was already sold off to a few land dealers.” The family has denied ever selling off the land.

But the family did not report the matter to the police and instead chose to confront Solanki at his residence on Monday. Arjan said Solanki told the family that they will never get back their land. When the family threatened suicide, he said ‘If you want to kill yourselves, don’t waste time, you can do that today as well. You will not get back the land’, said Arjun.

The family then consumed pesticide, which alarmed the others and the victims were rushed to V S Hospital in Ahmedabad, where Mansinh and Kalusinh are reported to be in critical condition.

Mansinh was carrying the papers containing the details of the land and the fraud and they were recovered from his pockets after he collapsed.

Sandeep Singh, Superintendent of Police, Ahmedabad district, said: “There was an internal family battle for that plot, but they did not approach the police. They tried to solve it themselves with the accused. But the deal did not work out and they consumed poison. We will investigate the case thoroughly and see where and when the fraud took place.”

Inspector A R Desai said: “We have booked the accused under Section 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) as they had threatened the farmers of dire consequences. We are collecting all the documents. After ascertaining the actual problem we booked them for fraud.”
