The government of India's Sarvashiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is preparing to provide education to at least 50,000 students in the state, in the age bracket of 5 to 14.

This project, 65% of whose cost is being borne by the Centre and the rest by the state government, will educate children who're presently deprived of schooling. The total cost of the initiative is slated to be Rs1,330 crore for the present financial year alone.

A web portal was launched in Gujarat by Canara Bank, in association with the HRD ministry of the government of India, to keep track of usage of funds. "Both the Centre and state governments have started allocating funds for the project, and we have started implementing it. Besides providing education, we will develop schools, new classrooms and other academic infrastructure under this project," said Neelam S Kumar, controller of accounts, HRD ministry, who was in the city to launch the web portal.

She further said that the portal will be monitored by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). "The PMO will keep track of funds at the grass root level as well. The SSA web portal will be used to verify as to whether the funds finally reach the students," she added.

J Raghunatha Rao, deputy general manager with Canara Bank, Ahmedabad circle, said that the launch of the portal coincides with the 'World Literacy Day' falling on Wednesday.

"We have created this portal in association with the central government, and Gujarat is the 22nd state in the country to launch it. The target of project SSA is to provide education to each and every child in the state. Not a single student should miss out with education," Rao said.
