Fifty-two more local body representatives have resigned protesting ‘police atrocities and lack of development of the region,’ in the Korchi tehsil of Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra. The total number of resignations now stands at 218 in Korchi.

“The list includes 27 sarpanchs, 27 deputy sarpanchs, 31 police patils and 133 gram panchayat members,” Nandkishor Vairagade, secretary of the Sarpanch Union of Korchi told The Hindu .

“On June 29 Baiju Hidami, the police patil of Fulagondi village, and 22 other villagers near Korchi were beaten up by some police personnel. A few days before that, the 360 company of CRPF had disrupted a marriage ceremony in the Nadekal village of Korchi. For eight days no villager was allowed to go outside the village,” said Korchi Sarpanch, Meghashyam Jamkatam. .

“After these incidents, all the members of the Korchi Sarpach Union decided to tender their resignations in protest against police atrocities and un-fulfilment of demands that we had put forward to the Government,” said Mr. Vairagade.

Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police (SP), Suvez Haquetold The Hindu that he did not have the complete information about the Nadekal incident, since he joined after that incident took place. “But about the Fulagondi incident, I have told the SDPO of Korchi to investigate and we will take action if anybody is found violating human rights,” he said.

On 28 November last year, the people and local representatives of Korchi had submitted a demand charter to the government representatives in Gadchiroli. It included 22 demands.

The demands included construction of roads in the region, payments of wages under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), improvement of health facilities in the region and cancellation of mining leases.

“But not even a signal demand was fulfilled, on the contrary police atrocities have increased in the region which has forced us to take this extreme step,” said Mr. Vairagade.

One villager told this correspondent that there was no regular bus service in the area and only after these mass resignations had bus service been provided.

But District Collector Abhishekh Krishna disputed the claims of the Korchi Sarapanch Union. “This is not entirely true. We have spent around Rs. 2 crore under the Integrated Action Plan in the construction of road and hospital in this region,” said Mr. Krishna .

With these 218 resignations, the total number of resignations of local body representatives in Gadchiroli district has now shot up to 355. Gadchiroli zilla parishad CEO Sumant Bhange said that apart from the mass resignations from Korchi, his office had received 137 resignations from the elected representatives from different parts of Gadchiroli.
