550 students in Attapadi are malnourished: Min

Thiruvananthapuram: A medical examination of 8,200 tribal children in 33 schools in Attapadi has revealed that 550 of them are having haemoglobin count less than the preferred level, minister for SC, ST, backward classes and law A K Balan said.

Replying to a submission by MLA N Shamsuddin, the minister said that the 550 students had their haemoglobin count less than 10g, against the normal value of 12g. He said that in the case of 53 children, they have less than 7g and in the case of five children the situation is even worse as they have been identified with haemoglobin level as less than 5g.

He said that there are 1,500 more children to be diagnosed for checking their haemoglobin levels. He said that the government is ensuring that the tribal children in Attapadi are given the best medical facilities, and the infant mortality rate in the area is less than even the state average.
