PUNE: About 35% admissions under the reservation policy of the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE) have been effected in the state so far.

Sofar, 66,306 out of 2.25 lakh students from the economically and socially weaker sections have taken admissions in 8,500 private schools across the state under the RTE. The process began on January 1 with the distribution of forms.

State director of primary education (additional charge) Mahaveer Mane said that big cities like Pune, Mumbaiand Nagpur have registered a good response. "Awareness about the 25% reservation scheme has been very good this year. The beneficiaries are coming forward to avail of the scheme, thanks mainly to social workers and NGOs who are reaching out to the needy and are getting the formal admission process done for the students."

As per the RTE Act, allprivate schools other than unaided minority schools, will have to reserve 25% seats in class I or the entry level for students from the economically and socially weaker sections of the society.

Mane said that RTE was implemented last year for the first time, so the response was limited. "Only 33% of the total eligible beneficiaries tookadvantage. Besides, the government notification also came late and manystudents had already taken admissions in other schools."

Mane, however, did not divulge division-wise statistics of the admissions so far. "The process is still underway and the forms are sold in every district of the state. We hope more admissions would happen in the coming months. Once the admission window is closed, details will be announced."
