7 farmers die due to crop-loss shock

Distressed over the crop losses in the recent rains, seven more farmers died of shock in the state in the last 24 hours. While three farmers died in Guntur district, West Godavari, Krishna, Prakasam and Nalgonda districts accounted one death each.

Thota Apparao died of shock at Rentapadu in Sattenpalle mandal, while Mukteshwar Rao died of cardiac arrest at Attota in Kollipara in Guntur. Hanumantha Rao collapsed in his field on Sunday and died at Kondalarayunipalem in Nuzendla mandal in Guntur district. Rao took three acres on lease and incurred Rs 40,000 to cultivate paddy. "His entire crop was destroyed and he could not bear the loss," a relative said.

Ramaiah died of shock at Indugapalli in Vatsavayi mandal in Krishna district, while a tenant farmer Narasimha Rao died of a massive heart attack in Kuchipudi in Kodad mandal in Nalgonda district.

Krishna Murthy, who took four acres on lease to cultivate paddy, died of shock in Isukadoddi village in Undi mandal in West Godavari. Sources said Murthy incurred heavy losses as his entire yield got wet in the rains.

Meanwhile, protests by TDP workers in support of Chandrababu Naidu's indefinite fast continued in various parts of the state on Sunday. In Denduluru in West Godavari, TDP leaders and workers under the leadership of MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar organised a rally of bullockcarts to block traffic on the national highway. Vehicular movement was hit for over three hours as the workers shouted slogans against government apathy.

Senior TDP leader Tammineni Sitaram whose fast entered second day at Amudalavalasa in Srikakulam said the days of the Congress government were numbered what with the farmer community's interests ignored.
