At least seven persons have lost vision in one eye with infection “almost incurably damaging the other” after they underwent cataract operation in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, on July 12, according to their relatives. Recently, 50 people lost their vision and three died after a cataract operation in neighbouring Durg district.

While the Durg operation was conducted in a government camp, this was undertaken by a charity institute, Udayachal Dharmarth Netra Chikitsalaya, in Rajnandgaon, the constituency of CM Raman Singh.

Though the government is yet to confirm the number of victims, their relatives said seven have lost vision in one eye and infection, according to the doctors they approached, has incurably spread to the other eye too.

Of the 11 persons treated on July 12 at Udayachal, eight underwent cataract operation. All belonged to labour or farmer families.

Manik Bai, 76, was among those who underwent cataract operation. “We were called by Udayachal in the morning of July 12, but were operated only after paying Rs 3,000. Next evening, bandage was removed and immediately my mother and others complained of pus and itching,” said her son Jethu Ram Dewangan.

He said they were shifted to a Raipur hospital, from where they were discharged after three days. “My mother and six others have lost vision in the eye they were operated upon,” he said. Local channels and Congress claimed the seven have become completely blind. Others patients include Ganesh Ram, Puhup Lal, Mohan Kunwar, Himmat Lal and Agni Bai.

Udayachal admitted that the patients have infection even after almost four months of operation. “Seven patients reported infection. We immediately took them to a Raipur hospital and after a check up, brought them back. True, they still have infection but they are under treatment,” said Dr Pukhraj Bafna of Udayachal. Bafna is a child specialist but heads the Netra Chikitsalaya.

Eye specialist Deepshikha Agarwal said: “If someone is having infection for so long, his chances of recovery are very rare.”
