72% rural teens in state have not used computer, internet: ASER -Salik Ahmad

According to the report, the awareness indicators for the country are better than that of Rajasthan.

Nearly 72% of the youngsters in the age group 14-18 in rural Rajasthan have never used a computer and internet in their life, says the Annual Status of Education Report 2017 that was released on Tuesday.

The ASER report, prepared by the NGO Pratham, surveyed 1,071 youngsters in 60 villages of Udaipur district for its findings on the state. Nationally, the survey was conducted on more than 28,000 youngsters in 26 rural districts across 24 states.

According to the report, the awareness indicators for the country are better than that of Rajasthan. In the country, 59% of the youth in the said age group have never used a computer, against 72.2% in Rajasthan. The figures for the country and the state for the youth who have never used internet were 64% and 71.8%.

The percentage of youth not enrolled in any formal education setup was 22.7 in Rajasthan as compared to the national figure of 14.4. Among those in the age group not attending a school, college or vocational training programme, there is disparity among the figures for the two genders. While 17.5% of the males were not enrolled, the percentage of females not enrolled was 28.

In terms of learning ability too, the state fared poorly against the national average. In the state, 71% of the youth could read Class 2 level text; the corresponding figure for the country was 76.6%. In arithmetic, only 35.3% of the surveyed youth in the state could do division while 43.1% of those in the country were able to do the same.
