NEW DELHI: Making the most of one last opportunity offered by the Election Commission to enrol themselves before the general elections, 74.56 lakh people turned out at 9.3 lakh polling stations across the country on March 9 to file their applications.

EC sources said this is the highest number of Form 6, the application form an eligible voter is required to submit to be included in the rolls, received in a single day.

Uttar Pradesh led the pack, having received 15.4 lakh enrolment requests on March 9; followed by Andhra Pradesh with 11 lakh requests, Tamil Nadu with 9.95 lakh requests, Bihar with 7 lakh requests, Maharashtra with 4.7 lakh requests and Rajasthan with 4.5 lakh requests.

The serpentine queues outside polling stations across Delhi ensured that it beat states like Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand and Haryana. Other states that received over 1 lakh enrolment applications on March 9 are Gujarat (3.39 lakh), Karnataka (3 lakh), West Bengal (2.5 lakh), Odisha (2.10 lakh), Punjab (2.06 lakh), Madhya Pradesh (2 lakh) and Kerala (1.6 lakh).

The Indian electorate has swelled by nearly 9.76 crore voters between the last Lok Sabha poll in 2009 and 2014, and now stands at a whopping 81.45 crore.
