BERHAMPUR: Justice seems to be eluding a 78-year-old woman, Padma Maharana, of Komand village under Rabha police station in Ganjam district.

The senior citizen has become a destitute in her own land. She was ‘driven’ away from her village in 2002 by a group of miscreants who eyed her wealth. Having no way-out she moved to Bhubaneswar to continue her legal battle against the miscreants.

The miscreants had also allegedly looted her property in the village during her absence. Despite court orders in favour of the widow, the local police have remained silent. Neither have they recovered the stolen goods of the widow nor have they arrested anyone. As per the woman, the police officials have paid no attention to court orders passed in her favour three times in the past.

She has also approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik seeking justice.

Her husband died four decades ago. She had inherited a considerable amount of property. Her two sons had preferred to stay outside the village. She used to live at the village along with her daughter, Sabitri. A group of criminal elements of the village eyed the property as they had no male member at their home.

According to the complaint filed by her, she and her daughter were terrorised through several attacks which accompanied threats asking them to leave the village. On October 2, 2002, a group of miscreants, led by one Kanha Reddy entered her house and assaulted her daughter.

They also took away their family jewellery and stock of paddy. Despite several complaints, police did not come out to protect the women.

The miscreants barred her entry into the village compelling her to shift to Bhubaneswar. Her house at the village remains abandoned and her land had been taken over by the miscreants.

During the past few years, she approached Chief Minister, Governor, Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, DGP, Collector and SP of Ganjam district requesting implementation of court orders. But nothing materialised in her favour till date.
