About eight children go missing every day in the city, according to an RTI reply by Delhi Police. Across the city, over 2161 children had gone missing within a span of 270 days this year. Of them, 603 are yet to be traced.

The chilling story was disclosed by the Alliance for Peoples' Rights, an NGO, after analyzing the consolidated figures of children who went missing between January and September this year. "We had filed an application under the RTI Act on October 8 seeking information on missing children across 12 police districts in Delhi. Only seven districts – North, South, Outer, Northwest, New Delhi, East and Southwest – had replied. A notable exception came from the southeast district which did not give the figures even though Sangam Vihar area under it has traditionally been one of the most vulnerable areas," said Reena Banerjee from NGO Nav Sristi.

According to the RTI replies by Delhi Police, about eight children go missing in the city every day. The highest numbers of missing cases were reported from Outer and Northwest districts. While 549 children, from infant to 18 years, had gone missing in Outer district, 465 others in the same age group went missing from neighbouring Northwest district. The Outer district police managed to recover 427 children, but the Northwest district police was able to recover only 203 children.

Meanwhile, parents of children who had gone missing gathered outside the Press Club on Thursday demanding police action on their complaints. Their children, all below 12 years, had gone missing from across the city in the past three years, never to be found again. Fed up with police's alleged inaction, these parents, mostly poor migrant labourers, have now pulled in money to put posters across the city asking the general public to provide information regarding their missing children.

Some parents also promised rewards to anyone who can give information on their missing children. A reward of Rs 51,000 has been announced by the parents of Irfan (10), Varsha (8), Bhuria (9), Kajal (8) and Muskaan (3) — all residents of areas under Aman Vihar police station that has lodged 99 missing cases this year.

DCP (outer) Chhaya Sharma said, "About 70% of people residing here are labourers who go out to work leaving their children behind. We have tied up with four NGOs to set up crèches. We hope to make a beginning by providing a safe zone where parents can leave their children."
